Therefore applying the following main rules to ensure the elevator safety is necessary:
- Space of hoist way should definitely be kept clear, always keep in mind that if there occurred a fire in this space it may result that the persons inside the cabin will be smothered.
- It is vital to mount photocell for elevators not having inner door for preventing any jamming between lift cabin and moving layer.
- While building cleaning any ingress of water into hoist way should be avoided.
- Steel ropes should be checked regularly and abraded ropes should be changed without wasting time.
- Landing door glass should be intra-reinforced glass. Materials such as window glass, frosted glass or mica should not be used.
- The key to doors should not be used to rescue the persons confined in elevator cabin between floors. The electricity of elevator should be cut inside machine room, the brake arm on the machine should be opened by hand and elevator cabin should be retrieved to closest floor by using hand wheel and then you should help the persons getting out of elevator cabin.
- There should be lighting to recognize if the elevator cabin is on the floor or not.
- For lift cabins without any inner door, in an emergency, firstly stop button should be pressed and then help should be requested as pressing emergency button.
- Emergency button and emergency lighting should be kept as operating even if the electricity is cut.
- The goods to be landed inside cabin should be loaded equally, as traveling there should be avoided for any slipping and rolling.
- During fire and earthquake using elevators is prejudicial; stairs should be preferred rather than elevators.
- The manual instructions and related warning signs should be hung out at floors and inside elevator cabin.
- There should be no usable space under hoist way, if there is it should be closed or secured correctly.
- The cover of machine or entrance of machine room should be kept locked all the time. In an emergency or during maintenance, the key should be hold by the person in charge or superintendent for easy access.
- Any kind of goods except elevator equipment should not be settled in machine room.
- There should be louver inside machine room.
- The lighting inside machine room should be sufficient and operating.
- Instructions related to maintenance and rescue should be hung on somewhere inside machine room where it is possible to find and read easily.
- There should be kept fire extinguishers as meeting the requested capacity in compliance with machine room standards.
- If over load system does not exist it should be mounted, if exists it should be operating as being proper for elevator capacity
- Machine room should not be used as store.
